Time for a Whitening Trench Talk.

Question:
An office asked one of our TAMS what they can use to polish the teeth before we start doing an in-office Opalescence Boost whitening treatment?

Answer:
We would recommend a prophy paste for polishing and light removal of staining or plaque. You can also use flower of pumice if that is what you prefer as it is not too coarse. Polishing the teeth before the in-office is fine and the fluoride won’t change the up-take of the Opalescence Boost. However, we do not recommend that the office polish if the patient is already prone to sensitivity before whitening. Using Consepsis Scrub prior to Whitening is a great option as it achieves two purposes: cleaning and desensitizing. Apply with ICB/Starbrush and scour the teeth for a few minutes (added NS).

The office shouldn’t clean the teeth before an in-office treatment is done because this will increase the likelihood of it occurring or add to already existing sensitivity.

The patient should brush their teeth before a treatment.

Question:
How do we recommend getting the Opal Endo out of the chamber?  Is it suctioned like with our Luur Vacs?

Answer:
You should suction thoroughly then flush with copious amounts of water to get rid of the Opal Endo.  Our instructions read: Remove provisional restorative material and bleaching material to level of glass ionomer sealing material.  Rinse and clean access opening. Re-apply some temporary material for the next 10 to 14 days, prior to doing the final restorative work. Restore with adhesive dentistry procedures.

Question:
One doctor asked what product is recommended in case LC Blockout resin got on a uniform?

Answer:
LC Blockout can be rinsed out with acetone before it is cured.  After it is cured there is nothing that can remove it.  It can only be physically scraped/cracked off.

Question:
Dr. Kurthy’s KoR Whitening is claiming a new chemistry called Tri-barrel Hydremide Peroxide technology.  Is it real?

Answer:
Tri-barrel Hydremide Peroxide technology is simply marketing speak.  It is really 1 barrel of hydrogen peroxide gel, 1 barrel of carbamide peroxide gel, and the last one is an activator.  You mix the HYDROgen peroxide gel with the carbaMIDE peroxide gel and you make what he calls “Hydremide Peroxide”.  He then adds in an activator to his product.   Many companies, including Ultradent, combine hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide in some bleaching products – so this is nothing new.  He has just done a play on words.

Have a great weekend!
